On the early Thursday morning, the 20 students going on the Gaeta trip, including ourselves, took a train from Roma Termini to Formia, where we had a guided tour of different architecture that has been preserved through different periods of time. From Formia a bus took us to Gaeta, an Italian village 60 miles north of Naples. Upon arriving and putting down our bags, we explored the boat we were staying on, La Signora del Vento, a large three-masted fishing boat, the exterior of which was very old-fashioned, but the cabins were very spacious and nice. During the tour of Gaeta, we had an opportunity to explore the Art and Architecture of Gaeta. The highlights of the tour was the Golden Chapel, the bell tower and an amazing 10th-century church of San Giovanni del Mare! Most of the cathedrals were built on Roman ruins and it was fascinating how you could see very clearly the different periods of time with the different types of building materials stacked on top of one another. Before dinner, during the free time, we went to a carnival right next to the boat and had lots of fun – riding the carousel, the Ferris wheel and playing some carnival games! Afterwards, we had a dinner aboard the ship – the service was lovely, and the dinner was delicious – and finished the night off with a Stratego team challenge and I think it is fair to say that the entire Gaeta group definitely has a good chance of winning a game of Stratego now.

On Friday, once we had finished our late breakfast, we paid a visit to the Diocesan Museum where we delved into looking at illustrations, artifacts, and manuscripts, including the famous Dante’s Divine Comedy printed on a 15th-century press, and the Botanical garden, containing 150 different species of palm ranging from Australian to South American. We had a delicious traditional lunch of Tiella, traditional Gaetan pizza, in one of the most beautiful places you could ever dream of – an incredible house on the hill with a grand sitting room that had 18th-century frescos and a balcony where we could marvel at the entirety of Gaeta and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Needless to say, it was a magical experience and definitely worth the small hike up the hill. In the afternoon we arrived back on the boat, it left the shore and sailed out into the bay. Once the boat was anchored, swimming suits were put on and we dived into the sea – at first, it felt frostbite but as time went on we became used to it. The swimming was followed by the return to the shore, a dinner aboard, and the finals of the Stratego games.

On Saturday, at as early as 6:45, we woke up, packed our bags and prepared for the day’s adventures that turned out to be a hike in the nature reserve on Monte Orlando where we had a look into the Borbon defense system which was made for the siege of Gaeta. We also walked to the Split Mountain and the Cave of the Turk, and of course, lots of amazing photos were taken that morning. After lunch at the Historic Pizzeria Ciro, we walked to Serapo beach where I must admit I had the best nap of my entire life, as the sun covered me like a blanket. Then came the worst part of the trip – leaving… We took the train and arrived back to Rome. Overall, this was definitely a trip to remember, everyone on the trip was friendly, the atmosphere was pleasant, and the fun memories of the Gaeta trip will stay with us for years to come!
